What is infrared?

The sun brings life to our planet at many levels and with various different interactions. As a terrarium enthusiast, the three areas that interest us are: the so-called "ultraviolet" spectrum, visible light, and the "infrared" spectrum.

The spectral wavelengths of the Sun are measured in nanometers (nm) and are divided into groups based on wavelengths. Infrared starts at the edge of the visible light spectrum, where the human eye can only see between 400 and 700 nm, we move into the infrared ranges which are the wavelengths that keep us warm. Near infrared (IR-a) is around 700 nm to 1400 nm, mid infrared (IR-b) around 1400 - 3000 nm. After that, it is known as far infrared (IR-c).

What is a gold infrared lamp?

The gold infrared bulb is named for its metallic golden glow when the product is cold and off. Infrared light is virtually invisible to the human eye, with the bottom of the spectrum giving just that red glow you get from hot embers.

How does it work?

This product provides a high level of heat and a low level of visible light. The infrared light is direct and is not affected by air movement, making it up to fifty percent more efficient than other heating methods. Heat is projected over a large surface area, which, unlike a spot lamp, allows for a more natural basking experience. This vast area is filled with energy-rich infrared that is reflected and absorbed by the surrounding surfaces, just as the sun provides warmth; you will feel a warm and pleasant sensation as the near infrared penetrates your skin and the heat absorbed and stored by the sand beneath your feet is transmitted by conduction. This heating effect is the IR-c as it will also heat the surrounding air, by convection, in the same way a radiator heats your home. This also explains the three modes of heat transfer: radiation, conduction, and convection.
